Code of Conduct
Updated:
Purpose and Scope
This Code of Conduct applies to all participants - players, judges, staff, and spectators - at cEDH (Competitive Elder Dragon Highlander) Magic: The Gathering tournament events hosted by or in partnership with cEDH UK. It aims to foster a respectful, inclusive, and competitive environment aligned with the Magic Tournament Rules (MTR), Infraction Procedure Guide (IPG), the cEDH UK MTR and IPG addendums.
It also applies to all participants in any community spaces (such as the cEDH UK Discord) and non-tournament events hosted or managed by cEDH UK.
Core Principles
Respect: Treat all participants with dignity and courtesy.
Integrity: Play honestly and uphold the rules of the game.
Inclusivity: Ensure a welcoming environment for all, regardless of background or identity.
Player Expectations
Players attending events are expected to be familiar with the game’s rules and tournament procedures, as outlined in the following documents:
- Magic: The Gathering Comprehensive Rules
- Magic: The Gathering Tournament Rules (MTR)
- Magic Infraction Procedure Guide (IPG)
- European cEDH MTR & IPG Multiplayer Addendums
Players are expected to remain courteous and demonstrate good sportsmanship. While table talk is permitted, harassment, excessive pressure, badgering, or aggressive behaviour is not acceptable. You must treat all participants and staff with respect at all times.
Offensive or aggressive language, gestures, or behaviour should be reported to a judge immediately and may result in disciplinary action.
Do not touch other participants, staff or their belongings without permission. Respect personal space at all times.
There is zero tolerance for harassment of any kind including bullying, or discrimination based on age, body size, visible or invisible disability, ethnicity, sex characteristics, gender identity and expression, level of experience, education, socio-economic status, nationality, personal appearance, race, caste, colour, religion, or sexual identity and orientation.
Players are expected to treat the event venue with care and consideration. Please follow any venue-specific rules and help maintain a clean play area by disposing of your rubbish properly.
Players must not attempt to use, trade or sell counterfeit Magic: the Gathering cards. All playtest (“proxy”) cards must be clearly marked so they cannot be confused for real Magic: the Gathering cards. Playtest card limits may be set by the Tournament Organiser and must be followed.
Enforcement and Penalties
Tournament judges will enforce the MTR and IPG at Competitive REL (Rules Enforcement Level). Other event judges will enforce at Competitive or Regular REL, as is appropriate. Infractions may result in warnings, game losses, match losses, disqualification, or removal from the venue. Appeals may be made to the Head Judge, whose decision is final.
Players who violate the Code of Conduct may receive an official warning from cEDH UK. This usually takes the form of a conversation with a member of the project team. Players who continue to violate the Code of Conduct after receiving a warning may be banned from attending events and participating in the Discord. In extreme cases, players may be banned without a warning.
Reporting and Support
Players should call a judge (or the Tournament Organizer (TO) if no judge is available) to resolve any gameplay or player issues as soon as they arise at their table during events. If you are ever unsure, uncomfortable, or confused, don’t hesitate to call a judge. Doing so early helps prevent misunderstandings from escalating. Calling a judge is not a sign of pettiness nor is it ‘snitching’; judges are there to ensure the event runs fairly and smoothly for everyone. Players should also call a judge on themselves if they realise they have broken a rule, made a mistake, or unintentionally gained an advantage so the situation can be resolved fairly and promptly.
If you experience or witness any behaviour that violates this Code of Conduct at a cEDH UK event, the best course of action is to immediately report it to a judge, TO or member of the project team so that they can handle it appropriately. In the event you are unable to report an event issue immediately, or if you experience or witness Code of Conduct violations in the cEDH UK Discord, please contact Ben Mullan or a member of the Project Team with your concerns. All reports will be handled confidentially and respectfully.
You can contact Ben via the Discord or via cEDH.UK@gmail.com. You can contact the Project Team via Discord.
